DOJ Extends ADA Title II WCAG Web Accessibility Deadlines

Effective today, the U.S. Department of Justice (DOJ) has issued an Interim Final Rule (IFR) extending the compliance deadlines for Title II of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) web and mobile application accessibility requirements. Public entities will now receive an additional year to achieve WCAG 2.1 Level AA compliance.
New Compliance Deadlines:
- Large state and local governments (population 50,000 or more): extended from April 24, 2026, to April 26, 2027.
- Smaller public entities (population under 50,000) and special district governments: extended from April 26, 2027, to April 26, 2028.
The scope and substance of the 2024 ADA Title II web accessibility rule remain unchanged, and the technical standard remains WCAG 2.1 Level AA.
The DOJ cited resource, staffing, and technological constraints, concluding it overestimated covered entities’ ability to meet the original timelines and sought to reduce litigation and compliance risks. Public comments are due on June 22, 2026.
