The answer to the question of whether a fully vaccinated individual[1] needs to quarantine following “close contact” exposure to a confirmed or probable COVID-19 case depends on the guidance from your local health department. At present, and while the below is subject to change, this is how some local health departments have answered the question:

  • Cook County: Quarantine is not necessary when a fully vaccinated person is a close contact (aligns with CDC guidance).
  • DuPage County: Continues to recommend fourteen (14) day quarantine for close contacts, even those who are fully vaccinated.
  • Lake County: Quarantine is not necessary when a fully vaccinated person is a close contact (aligns with CDC guidance).
  • Sangamon County: Quarantine is not necessary when a fully vaccinated person is a close contact (aligns with CDC guidance).

Given the variance among LHDs, please contact your local LHD when assessing whether a fully vaccinated individual needs to quarantine following a “close contact” COVID-19 exposure and follow their guidance. We recommend that you do the same for fully vaccinated individuals that experience COVID-19 symptoms.

Note that this publication is not intended for K-12 schools. Illinois school districts should follow the March 2021 Joint Guidance issued by IDPH and ISBE.

[1] Fully vaccinated is defined as “two weeks after the second dose of a two-dose COVID-19 vaccine or two weeks after one dose of a single-dose vaccine.”
